In the 1920's, Washington Avenue was known as the "garment district" and the center of city commerce. Today, Washington Avenue is undergoing a major restoration including street design with decorative sidewalks, trees, new lighting, and park benches, street level retail space and restaurants and the development of several loft and residential units.
The term 'loft' generally is associated with large, adaptable open space that is usually converted and expresses the character of the original building. This reutilization of factory, warehouse and office buildings has created a real estate offering of lofts, condos, apartments, townhouses and single-family homes in this neighborhood, bringing this area of the city to new life, renamed the “loft district.”
